We emphasize story over message, character over agenda, and complexity over duality, and in doing so The Purple Onion strives to represent a humanistic perspective, free of cultural stereotypes and political leanings. The social-economic element, how foreclosure affects our characters, acts as a catalyst for the story rather than a focal point or an issue under analysis. With the belief that the storyteller must be beyond national and geographical politics our story focuses on an estranged Chinese immigrant and her Chinese-American son, both shunned by society. Filial responsibility and independence, free will and fate, and loneliness and companionship are core issues of The Purple Onion.
